WHSAD Students Present Innovative Design Proposals for STREB Renovation

This spring, students from Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design (WHSAD) showcased their creativity, technical skills, and problem-solving abilities as they presented their final design proposals for the renovation of STREB.

The presentations marked the culmination of a year-long mentorship program running from September through May, organized in partnership with CTA. Throughout the program, CTA mentors met bi-weekly with student teams, guiding them through the architectural design process while helping them develop their design thinking, architectural drawing, and presentation skills.

This year's program was especially memorable because students had the unique opportunity to visit STREB in person. During their tour of the facility, students explored the building firsthand and gained a deeper understanding of how the space functions. They also attended a live performance of INTO THIN AIR, giving them valuable insight into the organization's mission and the specific spatial needs of a performance art environment. Experiencing the space in action allowed students to approach the design challenge with a greater appreciation for the relationship between architecture, movement, and performance.

The project challenged students to reimagine underutilized areas within the facility while working within real-world constraints. Teams were asked to develop solutions that addressed accessibility, sustainability, functionality, and the unique requirements of a dynamic performance arts venue. Through site analysis, concept development, and design refinement, students gained hands-on experience tackling challenges similar to those faced by practicing architects and designers.

The final presentations demonstrated an impressive level of creativity and professionalism. Students thoughtfully balanced aesthetic vision with practical considerations, offering innovative ideas that reflected both the character of STREB and the needs of its users.

Congratulations to the winning team—Yusuf, Joshua, Evan, and Jelani—whose proposal stood out for its thoughtful design approach, innovative solutions, and strong presentation. Their achievement reflects months of dedication, collaboration, and hard work.

We are also excited to announce that Yusuf has been selected to participate in CTA's Summer Internship Program. Throughout the mentorship program, he demonstrated exceptional commitment, creativity, and leadership, making him a natural choice for this next opportunity. We look forward to supporting his continued growth as he gains firsthand experience in the design profession.

We are incredibly proud of all the students who participated and grateful to the mentors who dedicated their time and expertise throughout the year. Programs like this demonstrate the power of connecting education with real-world experiences, inspiring the next generation of architects, designers, and creative thinkers.

Congratulations to all involved on a successful and impactful year.
