Unity towers rehabilitation

CTA, as part of the Fifth Avenue Builders (FAB) design-build team, is providing architectural services for the comprehensive modernization of Unity Towers, a 193-apartment public housing development in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

The project includes extensive improvements to apartments, building systems, façades, and an expansion of the lobby including a new package and mail room, upgraded hallway lighting and finishes, and a new community room. Planned work includes complete window replacement and façade repairs; full kitchen and bathroom renovations; flooring replacement; plumbing and ventilation upgrades; optimization of in-unit heating; safety and security improvements; landscape improvements; hazardous-material abatement; and upgrades to pest control and waste-management systems.

Resident engagement is an integral part of the project. Following Unity Towers residents’ vote to join the New York City Public Housing Preservation Trust, community visioning workshops, meetings, surveys, and direct outreach helped identify resident priorities and inform the scope of work. Engagement will continue throughout design, providing residents with opportunities to weigh in on finishes, colors, and other elements that directly affect their homes and shared environment.

Through the modernization, the project will address critical building needs while improving the quality, functionality, and long-term performance of residents’ homes and the development as a whole.
