Bronx Excellence Gym Addition
This project centers on a new full-size gymnasium addition at the existing Bronx Excellence school located at 1160 E. 213th Street, designed to support athletics, assemblies, and broader student programming within a bright, student-centered environment.
The gym volume is defined by a Kalwall facade system, creating a continuous luminous envelope that gives the illusion of natural illumination from the exterior while providing high-performance daylighting and energy efficiency. This envelope strategy also supports potential Passive House-level performance for the full addition, reinforcing the building’s environmental and thermal efficiency goals.
Supporting the gym are three classrooms, administrative offices, locker rooms, restrooms, and related support spaces, organized to strengthen daily school operations while expanding both educational and athletic capacity.
The project also includes a new main entrance and central lobby that connects the existing building to the gym addition, improving wayfinding and establishing a more cohesive and welcoming entry experience. A new elevator is introduced to serve both the existing building and the addition, improving accessibility and vertical circulation throughout the school.
