Constructed in 1906, Forsyth Satellite Academy is a masonry school building notable for its early 20th-century architectural detailing, particularly the now-lost sheet metal cornice that once crowned its street-facing façades. This restoration project set out to faithfully reconstruct the building’s original cornice, reestablishing the building’s historic character.
Informed by archival photographs and original construction drawings, the new cornice precisely replicates the original profile and ornamental detailing that had long been lost by previous renovations. Its reinstatement restores the building’s originally intended silhouette and architectural prominence, bringing back the depth, shadow, and articulation that once defined its roofline.
In tandem with the cornice reconstruction, parapet and bulkhead walls were rebuilt to ensure both visual continuity, structural integrity, and waterproof construction. The restoration also addressed the structural support at the courtyard elevations, where masonry above window heads is carried by embedded steel angles and exposed C-channel lintels. Careful coordination between these historic elements and the new systems used to replace them ensured a cohesive, waterproof, and context-sensitive restoration.
Recoating of the ground floor cast stone, replacement of the main roof, cellar wall grout injection and other miscellaneous work completed this full building envelope restoration.
