LOCAL FLAVOR

I first fell for the Chelsea Hotel a few years before I moved up to New York City. I had just discovered Leonard Cohen and was already longing for infinitely cooler yesteryears on 23rd Street. My friends and neighbors would would have been glamorous, brilliant, eccentric: Tennessee Williams, perhaps, or at least a Warhol superstar.

A decade has since gone by, but my love for the Chelsea Hotel remains. CTA’s office is just a few blocks north, so I frequently pass by on my way to and from work. Sometimes I’ll just pause and appreciate the wealth of history tucked behind that lovely, constant facade. When I’m decadent, I’ll stop in the Doughnut Plant that’s made home in the hotel’s first floor. Sure, a Tres Leches doughnut isn’t the local flavor I first dreamt of so many years before, but no matter.

Either way, it’s delicious.
